South Pays Bigouden

The Pays Bigouden (Ar Vro Vigoudenn) is part of Cornouaille (Bro Gernev), which in the ancient times was a political and religious partition of Brittany, covering the 2/3 of modern Finistère and the South-West of the Côtes d'Armor. Nowadays Cornouaille only spreads on one third of its former territory, the South-West one. The Pays Bigouden is itself divided into two parts : the South Pays Bigouden and the Upper Pays Bigouden. It was formerly named "Cap Caval".

One thing about the Pays Bigouden is the famous and long headdress of the women from last century. Despite the common belief, not every woman in Brittany wore this "coiffe", but only the Bigoudenes. Some people say that it was under the reign of Louis 14th that women in the Pays Bigouden had extended their coiffe to such dimensions. Here is the story.

Louis 14th attempted to create new taxes, especially on salt, the "gabelle". He also tried to reduce even more the rights of women in society in a period of war and poverty. But in the Pays Bigouden, women (and salt) had such an important place that an uprising started in 1675. It is known as "la Révolte des Bonnets Rouges" in lower Brittany and as "la Révolte des Papiers Timbrés" in a larger part of West France. Rebels used to communicate and gather thanks to the churches' bells. So when Louis 14th managed the uprising, he cut off 6 steeples from 6 churches in the Pays Bigouden. In opposition to that, women decided to increase the height of their "coiffe", thus proclaiming their belonging to their village and religion.

In short and as a mockery of the king's decision, they wore the steeples on their head, from where no one could remove them. This is one version among others of the history of the Bigoudene coiffe. If you want to know more about the History of the Pays Bigouden, please follow us...

Loctudy - Ile Tudy

Loctudy is a fishing seaport, a marina and a village offering some pieces of architectural heritage such as the flag semaphore and the Tourelle des Perdrix, a chessboard-like lighthouse. One can practice water sports, clam digging or sea fishing or just enjoy the beautiful beaches. Ile Tudy can be reached via a small ferry boat from Loctudy. It is also a place of departure to the Glénan Islands.

Quick history

Loctudy was created in the 5th century by the monk Saint-Tudy (Locus-Tudy = a place dedicated to Tudy). It first developped through agriculture, especially potatoe growing, since the fishing activity was all located in Ile Tudy. Edouard le Normant, lieutenant in the navy, came to Loctudy and decided to build the seaport in 1813. A hundred years later, Loctudy had become one of the most important town of the Pays Bigouden in terms of fishing, outgoing Ile Tudy, and even possessing a shipyard.

Nowadays Loctudy is known for the "Demoiselles de Loctudy" (Loctudy's Ladies) which are the living scampi the fishermen bring back and sell everyday by auction. A show not to be missed !

To be seen
  • The flag semaphore of Pich Poud or Saint-Oual. Flag semaphores were the ancestors of semaphores. They were always built on top of some hill or cliff above the sea. Two men used to be in charge of reporting the traffic on sea, using flags, especially around the Glénan Islands.
  • The Tourelle des Perdrix. It is a lighthouse painted with 64 black and white squares, looking like a chessboard on the water. It used to symbolise the belonging of Loctudy and Ile Tudy to the mouth of the river "AN TEIR". (In Breton language, Teir meant "3 branches" as the 3 branches of the river). This small lighthouse is no more part of the marine communication network.
  • The Moulin à Marée de "Pen ar Veur". This tide mill has been in function for 200 years. It was reduced into ruins during WW II and is now being restored.
  • The Manoir de Kérazan. The mansion is one of the eldest feudal ones in the Pays Bigouden, dating back to the 16th century. Surrounded by 5 acres of land on which stands a farm with its animals, it has now been converted into a museum showing drawings, paintings and furniture.
  • The Fountains of Coz Castel (the sliding step fountain), of Brémoguer, of Suler and the buried fountain of Kérazan.

Also

The Saint-Tudy church, the Porz chapel, the Saint Quido chapel, the Laudonnec Saint-Oual chapel and the standing stone of Penglaouic.

As said above, Ile Tudy has been known as an important fishing seaport since the 14th up to the 19th century, especially thanks to sardine fishing and canneries. At this time, one could reach Ile Tudy by foot at low tide. But the lack of drinking water and the floods due to spring tides used to bring cholera and typhus plagues. In 1852 the construction of a dyke changed for good Ile Tudy into an artificial peninsula. The increasing wealth of Loctudy ruined the last fishing activity on Ile Tudy. Nowadays except from oysterfarming, it is a quiet seaside station providing beaches, walking paths and water sports school. It looks like a miniature village which streets allow seaview from both sides as well as a magnificient view on Loctudy.

The small seaport of Sainte-Marine

Combrit - Sainte-Marine

Sainte-Marine (Sant-Voran) is a small town belonging to Combrit. It is located at the beginning of the Odet river ria ("aber" in Breton). The town was once a trading then a military seaport. It is nowadays a seaside station and a small marina. During the summer, Bénodet can be reached via a small ferry boat for pedestrians or by the bridge at any season.

Quick history

Combrit seems to come from the old french word "combre", meaning "confluent". Combrit was probably created in the 6th century and was totally part of the parish of Pont l'Abbé. During the French Revolution, Combrit was separated from Lambour which became part of Pont l'Abbé and then from Ile Tudy in 1826 which became independant. Combrit is one of the six towns which steeple was cut off in the 17th century by Louis 14th. The steeple was only built again a century later. The architect who rebuilt the steeple was Mr Bigot. Some say that the word "bigouden" comes from his name.

One man particularly left his mark on the town : the philanthropist artist Jacques de Thézac. He came to Combrit - Sainte-Marine in 1888 and very quickly became conscious of the hardness and difficulties of the fishermen lives. That's why he founded the "Abri du Marin" ("Fishermen' Shelter") in Sainte-Marine in 1910, among the 14 others he managed to build in other breton seaports. The entire network is known as the Oeuvre des Abris du Marin (Fishermen' Shelters Piece of Work). Those meeting places used to provide education, reading lessons, lectures, cultural development, libraries and led an active struggle against alcoholism. The Fishermen' Shelter of Sainte-Marine has now been restored and has become a museum in tribute to Jacques de Thézac, also showing temporary exhibitions about fishing.

To be seen
  • The Fort de Sainte-Marine ou Fort Vauban. It was built under Napoleon 3rd in 1862 as a defensive post. It is now a place of contemporary artists exhibitions.
  • The Phare de Sainte-Marine "The Sainte-Marine Lighthouse" or Feu de Combrit. It is located next to the Fort and was built in 1885 to draw a north line with the lighthouse of Bénodet. It is side by side with the house of the lighthouse keeper. A walking path idea : leaving from the beach or from the lighthouse, you can walk downtown along the seaside. The walking path offers a beautiful view on Bénodet and crosses a beautiful small beach.
  • On the road from Sainte-Marine to Pont l'Abbé stands the "Parc Botanique de Cornouaille" where 3500 species of plants are growing on a 4 acre park. Calm, smells, magnificient landscapes and a trip around the world guaranteed !

Also

The Saint-Tugdual church, the Sainte-Marine chapel, the Notre-Dame-de-la-Clarté chapel, the 2 meters high standing stone of Le Treustel and the laying stele of Le Leoc.

Pont l'Abbé

Pont l'Abbé

Pont l'Abbé (Pont-'n-Abad) is the capital of the Pays Bigouden. It is known for the Musée Bigouden located inside the castel "Château des Barons du Pont" and for the Bigoudene embroidery and basketry. Boats come up the tidal river which offers magnificient views and walking paths. Pont l'Abbé is full of shops selling all the Breton products and merchandising.

Quick history

The numerous prehistorical remains found around Pont l'Abbé tell us that the place has always been inhabited. (Some pieces have been brought to the Musée Préhistorique of Saint-Guénolé, Penmarc'h.) During the 11th century some feudal landowners came and settled on this land which was then part of the abbey of Loctudy. It will later become the feudal dungeon of the Baron du Pont and then the castel, as it can be seen nowadays. In the 15th century, Pont l'Abbé became a barony and its seigneurs dominated the place. in the 17th century the Révolte des Bonnets Rouges took place in Pont l'Abbé and the stteple of Saint-Jacques de Lambour church was destroyed. In 1791 the growing town became a parish and annexed Loctudy, Plobannalec, Plomeur and Combrit, which since have got their independence back.

To be seen
  • The Castle - Le Château de Pont l'Abbé ou Château des Barons du Pont, located in the center of town, with its medieval vaults. Inside its walls you can go to the Musée Bigouden where you'll be taught everything you need to know about the headdress, the traditionnal costumes and what it means to belong to the Pays Bigouden. Temporary exhibitions are also available, along with the permanent collection of the museum.
  • The Church - L'Eglise Notre-Dame-des-Carmes. Built in the 14th century, it has got a huge and magnificient great organ. Its cloister was moved to Quimper in the 15th century.
  • The 4 km towpath walk provides calm, beautiful views on the embankment and the tide, several species of birds can also be seen. It ends up in front of the ruins of an old house which used to be a café until the early 19th century, known as the White House.

Next to these visits, you will be able to stroll along the granit streets of Pont l'Abbé, flanked by numerous shops (Breton sweaters, cakes, pottery, ...).

Lesconil

Plobannalec - Lesconil

Plobannalec and Lesconil, though they are 3 km away, are part of the same town : Plobannalec being more into land and agriculture and Lesconil more into sea and fishing. Nowadays even if the scampi fishermen are still working for our pleasure, the town has devlopped the touristic activities with its marina and its water soprts school.

Quick history

The territory has been inhabited for centuries. Many megaliths or parts of are still visible. There is not much information about the beginning of our era about the town, except for the Revolte des Bonnets Rouges in the 17th century.

In the early 19th century, Lesconil was just a coastal crossroads, next to the Steir ria, only equipped with a natural port which is nowadays used by very small boats. The semaphore of Lesconil xas built at this period. At the same time, the inhabitants of Plobannalec began to quit agriculture and come to Lesconil to make a bit more money with fishing.

The current seaport was built in 1878. It was first dedicated to unloading the fishing boats as well as rescuing since shipping was quite unsafe in the area at that time. Then canneries, a shipyard and a fishing school are created. In 1905 a fuel semaphore is constructed on the Men ar Groaz headland. Dykes, quays, auction appear and the semaphore gets electrified. The bay was thus getting a more easy access since it was no longer exposed to dangerous streams and winds. Fishing activities developped even more.

Now both fishing and agriculture are becoming less and less important in the economy of the town. This is why Lesconil is the smallest and more traditionnal seaport of all the Pays Bigouden. Fishermen are still selling their fishes and scampi directly on the port everyday around 16pm. It is interseting to see that they are often willing to answer the tourists' questions about their job.

To be seen

The Mansion - Le Manoir de Kerhoas. It is a typical feudal mansion from the 16th century. It is a private mansion but during the summer it is open thanks to the "Fête des Vieux Métiers et du Patrimoine" ("the Ancient Professions and heritage") in July.

The megaliths of Quélarn. It was made of 6 dolmens and long corridors leading to a giant funeral room of 8 * 8 m, as well as 27 graves. Unfortunately only standing stones and one full dolmen are now visible.
